Rolling bearings use rolling elements to separate moving parts and reduce rotational friction. They are good for supporting both radial and axial loads.

There are a variety of different rolling bearings including: ball, spherical, cylindrical, needle, tapered, spindle, and barrel. Furthermore, these can be separated into open, shielded, or sealed types.

Understanding The Journal Bearing

Friday, October 7th, 2016

Journal bearings, which are sometimes referred to as plain bearings or solid bearings, are simple bearings that contain no internal rolling components. The journal slides directly over the surface of the bearing.

For example, a shaft that is rotating inside of a hole can be considered a simple journal bearing. A drawer that slides open and close can be considered a simple linear plain bearing. The difference between the journal bearing and the linear bearing is the range of possible motion.
