Food Grade Bearings for Food & Beverage Industry

There are many moving parts within the food and beverage industry, but one of the most important parts to consider are the bearings. They may come in various shapes and sizes and with different options, but the purpose they serve is generally the same.

Unlike other industries that may have more relaxed requirements for bearing usage, the food and beverage industry has rather strict requirements. These may be in place because of some of the environments where the bearings operate, including the following:

Wet Environments – The wash down process that takes place regularly could cause problems with bearings that are not specifically suited for the purpose.

Hot Environments – If frying, baking or other cooking methods are being used in the area, it could expose the bearings to excessive heat. Some mounted bearings are able to withstand temperatures of up to 600 degrees.

Cold Environments – This could be a problem where refrigeration or freezer applications are necessary.

Chemical Environments – The bearings may be exposed to harsh cleaning and sanitation chemicals.

The bearings need to be made from a type of material that is non-corrosive. Some of the more common metals that are used include stainless steel, thin dense chrome, and zinc chromates. There are also some bearings that may be used without the use of lubrication, which makes them ideal for cleaning and sanitation.

Not only is it important to consider the specific bearings that are used in the food and beverage industry, it is also necessary to consider the type of lubrication.

Of course, improper lubrication (including the type of lubrication) is one of the most common causes of bearing failure. In the food and beverage industry, however, it is also necessary to use lubrication that has been approved by the USDA. Typically, the only type of lubrication that is approved is H1 or H2 food grade lubrication.

In the end, it is important to keep the entire operation in line with current standards. In addition, operating the machinery with proper bearings for the food and beverage industry will help to minimize extensive and costly downtime and cut costs from unnecessary equipment failure.
